The Floater

as per the CSS property "float"

I'm floating!

If you've ever played around with CSS, you know what I mean by this. What the Floater basically does is that it allows you to have a block of text which is "floating" on either the left or right side of the screen, and have the surrounding text flow around the text itselef. Look to your right to see what I mean. Now you can do the same thing to your text documents by using this handy tool. This tool requires two sets of text: one set which will surround the "floated" text, and another set which is the floated text itself. Both sets of text need not be wrapped, and indeed it may be helpful to do so, since having line breaks already may mess up the output.

Hey guys, this is really just filler text so that you can grasp the concept of "floating," if you haven't already. I've already pointed this out to you, but you really need to notice how the surrounding text flows around the floated text.

So, in the grey box there below, you'll see that it's titled "Advanced options." These are advanced options that only I know the meaning of. Normally, a right-aligned float will use the "Meld" option, and a left-aligned float will use the "Add spaces" option. If you have a right aligned float and you force the "add spaces" option, it will cause the floated text to become right aligned. If you have a left-aligned float and you use the "meld" option, It will cause the surrounding text to become right aligned. In retrospect, I probably should have done away with this option and have options like "surrounding text alignment" and "float box text alignment," but I'm really lazy and just want to get this out. Maybe in the next version. Maybe if you pester me enough I'll do it. For now, an easy workaround is to left or right align the floated text in the Reformattor, then place it within the floated text box.

If you want a REAL box around your floated text, my answer would be to use the Tablemaker in conjunction with the Reformattor. Tell the Reformattor to wrap to a line length of what you want, say 20, then put that into the Tablemaker and make sure "Draw lines between rows" or whatever it's called is off. More creative uses of this with my other tools can yield similar results. Be creative!

  1. If I find another fencepost error I'm going to blow my stack. *rimshot*
  2. This is perhaps the ugliest page I have ever created in my entire life. Ugh! So...tacky...I can't look...directly at it!
